Preparing An Outdoor Pool for a Big Storm

When it comes to an outdoor custom pool, chances are you’ve put in plenty of time and money for yours. If a big storm is on the way, you naturally want to know how to protect your investment. At Dolphin Pools & Spas, we’re here to help with everything from tactics for preventing storm damage all the way to swimming pool repair if some damage does take place. Here are some tips we offer on preparing for a big storm, then for cleaning up after one. Before the Storm

• Pack loose items: All loose patio items, including chairs, umbrellas, pool toys and others should be put away. The lighter the object, the more diligent you should be. If you expect very high winds, put away larger items like tables or chaise lounges.
• Cover: For storms with low wind expectations, you should put your pool cover on like normal. But for those with high winds? Avoid the pool cover, as debris blowing into the pool can actually tear or otherwise damage the cover, plus can create more for you to clean up.
• Power: Turn off all power to your pool ahead of a storm.
• Don’t drain: You should not drain your pool before rain, as this can bulge or split out of the ground.
• Trim trees: If you expect high winds, trim dead or overgrown tree branches if you have time so they don’t break off and damage the pool.
• Water chemistry: To get a head start on cleanup, take a reading on your pool chemicals and add as needed to balance things out. If you want, you can shock the pool for a boost against dirt and other germs that might show up during the storm.
• Insurance: This should be handled in advance, but make sure your pool is insured.

After the Storm

• Pump and filter: After inspecting the components to ensure nothing is damaged or needs time to dry out, turn your pump and filter back on.
• Clean debris: Take the time to get all debris out of the water, using a skimmer for smaller items.
• Brush and vacuum: From here, pull out a brush or vacuum to get rid of major grime.
• Water chemistry: If you got a head start on this before the storm as we listed above, you might have very little work to do. In either case, check for levels of alkalinity, pH, calcium hardness, stabilizer and chlorine – all in that order.
• Don’t drain it: Just another reminder not to drain the pool during or after a storm.
