Lesser Known Maintenance Tips for Home Pools

At Dolphin Pools & Spas, we provide both installation and maintenance services for your beautiful new swimming pool. Our custom pools are tailored to your desires, and our swimming pool repair team is second to none in the rare instances where there are issues. As it turns out, you can help us minimize these issues even further. There are a few things you can do on a regular basis to prevent problems with your home pool, and keep you from having to call a pool contractor for costly repairs. Let’s take a look at a few examples.

Skimmer

The skimmer basket is the item that filters out leaves and other debris from your pool, and it’s very important to preventing long term damage. Make sure you’re checking it regularly – if it’s starting to decline, you should be clued in beforehand anyway by a lack of proper filtration. Clean the baskets once a week, and skim the surface for large debris every few days (more or less often if your particular environment dictates it).

Tennis Balls

A common issue many people aren’t aware of in pools is oil and grime that can build up over time. These are usually caused by things like sunscreen, makeup, hair products or body oils that people are wearing when they enter the pool. A fun, simple solution here: Buy some brand new tennis balls, and place them in the water or in the skimmers. They have properties that will help them absorb the oily substances and leave your water clearer.

Baking Soda

Baking soda is a universal cleaning product, and there’s no reason why it can’t be used in the pool. In particular, pH levels are commonly a concern in the pool that baking soda can solve quickly – a pound of baking soda is equal to a pound of any alkalinity product, and costs less. You can also use it to make a paste and clean tile and grout, which if done once a week or thereabouts will prevent potentially harmful algae from growing.

Bathing Suits

There’s nothing wrong with the occasional person jumping in the pool with regular clothes on, but over time, if too many people do this it can cause color bleeding issues. Dyes bleed into chlorine and can make the pool cloudy over time, an issue that can be tough to fix without a full drain. It’s best to make a rule about bathing suits.
